The Tweakers

Seth Godin recently asked Where are the tweakers?. In his post, he wonders why there aren’t any people that are offering to make slight changes to a website rather than completely redesign the site for someone. “Plastic surgery for websites.”

As a web designer, this is something that is very interesting to me. On one hand, tweaking sites could prove to allow more readily available clients, but on the other hand, the “big money” comes from spending the time designing, and coding a site from the ground up, or at least applying a new design on top of a CMS system.

Personally, I honestly tend to prefer the tweaking of sites, rather than a complete overhaul… to a point. When I come across a site, that I feel is in the need of tweaking, it generally isn’t that it needs to be changed visually, its that the site is using outdated markup and bad practices.

So what are your thoughts on the idea of tweaking versus overhauling?

About Me

I am an Application Developer for Fox Interactive Media. I am currently in the Stations group, working on the MyFox family of sites (MyFox LA). On top of working for FIM, I also design and develop websites for myself and on as a freelance contractor.

I have been working in the industry professionally for the past four years, and have worked with great companies, and even greater people. Some of the companies that I've had the pleasure to work for include Schematic, Iventa, 101communications (now 1105media), and MySpace.
